please be nice to translators
translating is really hard work, it takes me hours, days, or weeks for me to come up with something i’m satisfied with. any translator will tell you the same thing: translating is hard, it requires not only the knowledge of two different languages but also the ability to capture the same meaning and tone behind the words as the source language has.
so with that in mind, please respect translators, especially if they’re doing something like subbing anime or scanlating a manga or translating lines from a video game, it’s hard as hell and it’s really discouraging to me as a translator to put out something that i’m finally satisfied with after weeks of hard work and immediately get asked “when do i get more?”. give translators time and don’t disrespectfully ask them for more. there’s a difference between saying, “i can’t wait for more!” and saying, “when is the next part coming out?” a big difference.
and honestly if you’re a person that gets mad at a translator for not translating what you want them to translate, or you become friends with someone who can translate specifically so that they can translate things for you, then you need to step back and take a look at yourself and Leave
this has been a psa from a scanlator, have a nice day
I totally agree with this, although, on a slight tangent
While you should understand that what we do takes a lot of time and work and it’s not nice to pester for more when we’re doing this for y’all for free, translators are not sacred creatures who can do no wrong either. I think those of us who do know Japanese should not be so afraid to call out bad translations when we see them. And we shouldn’t be afraid to let editors reword our work so it actually makes sense to English speakers. There’s way too many “translations” in our scene that are only collections of words strung together as though someone just looked them up separately in a dictionary, without regard to actually getting across the meaning/intent of the sentence or rephrasing it to be comprehensible in English.
Don’t settle for this bullshit, guys. And don’t be so arrogant to think translation is so easy and uncomplicated that you can do it with a 101 class and a dictionary.
Reblogging again because this is an excellent point to bring up too. Translating is hard work and even then we all make mistakes, some of them more glaringly obvious than others.
Basically, the bottom line is to not be an asshat about everything.
